Contract Information:
Yellowhead Road & Bridge (Central Kootenay) Ltd. was formed in 2004 in response to a Request for Proposal to perform highway and bridge maintenance in the Central Kootenay Contract Area (Service Area #10). Our proposal was accepted and the company commenced maintenance of this contract area on June 02, 2004. The contract was extended in 2012 and we were successful during re-tendering in 2019. Our current contract was renewed on June 1st 2019 and will expire on May 30, 2029, with the possibility of a 5-year extension
As with all other YRB companies, Yellowhead Road & Bridge (Central Kootenay) Ltd. is 100% employee-owned. All the employee-owners take great pride in the work they do maintaining highways and bridges in the locale where they and their families live.
Geographical Information:
The Central Kootenay Contract Area contains the City of Nelson and the main towns of Creston, Salmo, Kaslo, New Denver and Nakusp, as well as the communities and settlements of Lardeau, Meadow Creek, Edgewood, Trout Lake and the North Shore and East Shore of Kootenay Lake. YRB has maintenance establishments in Nelson, Salmo, Creston, Crawford Bay, Winlaw, Kaslo, New Denver, Nakusp, Trout Lake and Edgewood. The boundary of SA 10 adjoins Service Area 9 to the west on Highway 3, 3A and Pass Creek Road , and Service Area 11 to the east on Highway 3, and SA12 to the north on Highway 23 at the Galena Bay Ferry and SA 13 to the northwest along Highway 6 near the Monashee summit.
The area contains approximately 1900 road kilometers of maintained roads (which includes approximately 800 road kilometres of numbered highways), 16 rest areas and approximately 268 structures. The area is quite mountains as has three significant mountain ranges; the Monashee, Kootenay Pass and Highway 31A. Kootenay Lake is by far one of the longest inland lakes in the Interior of B.C. with many others rivers systems generally running from north to south. The climate is considered to have mild winters with heavy precipitation and hot summers. The district also has two border crossings and six inland ferries.
