Yellowhead Road & Bridge (Kootenay Boundary) Ltd. was formed in 2018 after being selected as Preferred Proponent in the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructures 2018 Highway Maintenance Contract re-tendering process. The Kootenay Boundary Contract Area (Service Area #9) will expire on Sept 30, 2028 with the possibility of a 5 year extension.
The Kootenay Boundary contract area contains the main cities of Castlegar and Grand Forks, as well as the communities and settlements of Beaverdell, Rock creek, Carmi, Midway, Greenwood, Christina Lake, Rossland, Trail, Montrose, Fruitvale, Genelle, Brilliant, Warfield, and Birchbank. YRB (Kootenay Boundary) has maintenance establishments in Grand Forks, Birchbank, Midway and Beaverdell. The Contract area boundaries are located Northwest at McCulloch Road on Hwy 33, Southwest on Hwy 3 just west of Nine Mile Road, South on Hwy 22 at the Canada/US border, South on the British Columbia 395 Hwy at the Canada/US border, South on Hwy 41 at the Canada/US border, Southeast on Hwy 22A at the Canada/US border, East on Hwy 3B at the junction of Hwy 3 and 3B, and Northeast on Hwy 3A near Brilliant Dam Access Road.
The contract area contains approximately 1547 kms of road (with approximately 453 kilometers of gravel surfaces). There are 7 Rest Areas, 4 that are open all year round, 75 bridges, 28 Structures, 33 Retaining walls, and one Tunnel.
